Combinatorial Source Inversion from Displacement and Tilt Measurements at Soufriere Hills Volcano Using a Self-Adapting Evolution Strategy
نویسنده
چکیده
A method is proposed to invert displacement and tilt measurements from a single monitoring location to constrain the nature of a volcanic pressure source. Evolutionary strategy is applied to a sequence of Mogi solutions and the program is shown capable of distinguishing between depth and volume increment of the magma source, in addition to its 3-dimensional spatial coordinates. The mechanism is applied to Soufriere Hills Volcano to constrain the nature of its single pressure source. Expansion to a two source scenario is also sought, but only one of the sources may be correctly constrained while the second is narrowed to several equally valid possibilities. The program is shown incapable of distinguishing between source pressure and radius for single or multiple sources.

GPS Measurement of Surface Deformation Around Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat from October 1995 to July 1996
Global Positioning System geodesy was used to measure surface deformation on Soufriere Hills volcano, Montserrat from October 6, 1995 to July 1, 1997 during initial dome growth and gravitational collapse. Our data from this period show non-axially symmetric horizontal displacements, and decreasing subsidence as a function of radial distance from the former topographic high of the volcanic edifi...
متن کاملHeterogeneous Ice Nucleation by Soufriere Hills Volcanic Ash Immersed in Water Droplets
Fine particles of ash emitted during volcanic eruptions may sporadically influence cloud properties on a regional or global scale as well as influencing the dynamics of volcanic clouds and the subsequent dispersion of volcanic aerosol and gases. It has been shown that volcanic ash can trigger ice nucleation, but ash from relatively few volcanoes has been studied for its ice nucleating ability. ...
متن کاملMagma flow instability and cyclic activity at soufriere hills volcano, montserrat, british west indies
Dome growth at the Soufriere Hills volcano (1996 to 1998) was frequently accompanied by repetitive cycles of earthquakes, ground deformation, degassing, and explosive eruptions. The cycles reflected unsteady conduit flow of volatile-charged magma resulting from gas exsolution, rheological stiffening, and pressurization. The cycles, over hours to days, initiated when degassed stiff magma retarde...
متن کاملGeodetic constraints on the shallow magma system at Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat
[1] Ground surface tilts recorded proximal to a growing lava dome, and sustained through repeated dome collapses, provide unique geodetic constraints on the depth, size, and overpressures of the shallow magmatic system at Soufrière Hills Volcano. Tilt records identify a single pressure-source inflating with periods 3–30 h. Sustained tilt amplitude ratios for paired stations identify the pressur...
متن کاملLong range transport and fate of a stratospheric volcanic cloud from Soufriere Hills volcano, Montserrat
Volcanic eruptions emit gases, ash particles and hydrometeors into the atmosphere, occasionally reaching heights of 20 km or more, to reside in the stratospheric overworld where they affect the radiative balance of the atmosphere and the Earth’s climate. Here we use satellite measurements and a Lagrangian particle dispersion model to determine the mass loadings, vertical penetration, horizontal...
